Blog Archive mbaMission’s Exclusive Interview with University of Chicago Booth Director of MBA Admissions Rose Martinelli MbaMission was fortunate to have had the opportunity recently to speak one-on-one with Rose Martinelli, Director of MBA Admissions at Chicago Booth. We think the interviews is very much worth reading, particularly for anyone interested in Booth, but also for any MBA applicant. Here, we offer some highlights from the interview, followed by a full transcript of the interview. Booth saw an increase in domestic applicants and a decrease in international applicants duringh the 2008â€"2009 application season. Rose Martinelli  expects that application volume will decline marginally in 2009â€"2010. Booth recognizes and understands that many people have lost their jobs as a result of forces beyond their control and simply wants candidates to be honest about their situations in the applications and to explain their circumstances. Martinelli discusses how she reads an application, step-by step. We will be releasing additional interviews with admissions officers in the coming weeks. Enjoy our first with Booth’s Martinelli. mbaMission: Chicago Booth is stereotyped as a finance schoolâ€"is that fair? What should the school be known for that it’s not now known for? Rose Martinelli: Chicago Booth is much more than a finance school, it is an economic powerhouse, and critical thinking is at the core of everything we do. Economics underpins most business functions, including finance, strategy, marketing and entrepreneurship. While we have been known globally as a great financial institution because of the number of faculty who were awarded Nobel Prizes for their innovations in the financial markets, Booth offers so much more. Our entrepreneurship program, which has the Polsky Center at its foundation, is excellent and unique in its focus on both the practitioner and the investor side. The curriculum combines academic and experiential learning together to enhance the learning experience. Marketing is another area where we have been recognized for the work of our faculty in quantitative and behavioral marketing research. We recently received the ACNielsen database, which will allow for tremendous insight into consumer behavior. For students interested in pursuing a career in marketing, our combination of analytical and behavioral marketing coursework provides unparalleled preparation for future challenges. Booth’s new concentration, Analytic Management, provides the same type of rigor and depth focused on data-driven analysis as our analytic finance concentration. Our emphasis on and excellence in quantitative and statistical analysis for decision making is unmatched. These analytic methods are applied to a wide range of industries and functions, such as understanding advertising and consumer behavior, analyzing risk and incorporating uncertainty, identifying profitable customers and determining optimal pricing policies, accelerating product innovation, optimizing supply chains, identifying the drivers of financial performance, and allocating resources. Our focus is on building critical thinking skills that utilize the many lenses of business. We’re great on teaching technical skills, and making sure those technical skills are applicable and practical. At the same time, we’re equally focused on helping students to develop their executive presence and leadership profile. It’s a packaged deal. mbaMission: You mentioned marketing and entrepreneurship. Is there a strategy to grow these fields, or do these things just happen organically? RM: I think it’s been a combination of both. Typically, programs grow when student interest grows. It also grows when there’s faculty interest, and there is a lot of research going on. Over the past ten years, there has been a huge amount of growth in entrepreneurship due to those dual interests. Whereas the marketing group has always been a smaller group, but has gained enormous amounts of energy and prestige in the last five years with the launch of the Kilts Centerâ€"with a lot more groundbreaking research taking place behavioral and analytical marketing. The growth of our programs has always been linked to student and faculty research interests. Once there is enough of a groundswell, the administration also provides additional resources to strengthen those areas, and that’s what’s been happening here at Chicago Booth. mbaMission: Chicago Booth was fortunate to receive quite an impressive donation of $200MM from David Booth, who the school is now named for. I’m curious what the immediate impact of the gift is. RM: This remarkable gift came at the right time, just as the market began to tumble, which helped us remain shielded from some of those enormous pressures that occur when endowments fall. This gift has given us an opportunity to focus on strengthening the core value of Chicago, which is truly the power of inquiry. Instead of these dollars being put into scholarship funds, they’re being put into strengthening the overall value proposition of the school to ensure that we have the best faculty, we recruit and matriculate the best students, and that those students find great opportunities, facilitated by the support of our career services. It’s more about strengthening what was already strong, and ensuring that the Booth legacy continues long into the future. The other interesting thing about the donation was that it was a partnership distribution, rather than a lump sum gift. Therefore, as a partner in the fund, we’ll receive annual distributions. mbaMission: A couple questions about the financial crisis. I’m curious from an academic perspective how lessons from the financial crises have been taught over the last couple months. RM: Chicago is well known for our notion of “challenging everything” and to every idea there’s always a counter approach. There are free market and behavioral finance faculty researching and teaching side-by-side, so we were talking a lot about this long before the markets started to spiral downward. Now, the conversations have shifted to identifying solutions. Our faculty have been very active with the administration on both sides, analyzing and doing research on how best to structure a way out of this situation. I graduated from my executive MBA just a few weeks ago, and the classroom had ongoing discussions about what was happening in the news. Faculty were not only debating these ideas publicly on campus, but bringing [them] into the classroom as well. mbaMission: In the light of the downturn, will there be any changes in the qualities the school is seeking in candidates? RM: No. We are focused on selecting students who have records of achievement. And to me that can be seen in a number of ways: how well someone has done academically, how well he/she has navigated their career and leveraged opportunities. The second thing that we look at is a student’s level of self-awareness and their ability to engage and be intellectually involved in something that’s perhaps not so comfortable. Being able to get in there and debate, challenge each other, and be challenged are very central qualities to good leadership. While it is important to communicate ideas effectively, it’s more about what have they done, where are they going, and how this is all linked together, rather than elegant/eloquent writing skills. It can be short and sweet and very direct. When you know yourself well, you should know exactly what direction you are headed and what you need to be successful. mbaMission: Chicago’s first essay is a little bit less direct compared to that for other schools, with respect to short- and long-term goals. What are you expecting in this regard? RM: For me, the question as to why an MBA is important is much more relevant than exactly where you’re going, since goals change. The thought process that brought you to this place in your career is what interests me. I’m looking for a sense of direction and knowing what your needs are. If you have very refined goals, I would say that’s great. But for the vast majority of people, if you really pressed them, goals were often created recently and typically just for the application. And, since the whole point of an MBA experience is to explore, expand and develop a new understanding and awareness of one’s abilities and passions, I don’t get hung up on goals. I am, however, very interested in path, plan and knowing one’s self. mbaMission: When you make decisions, do you frequently consult career services? RM: This is an academic institution, so we’re here to educate. And we’re here to facilitate development of future leaders who can be successful in their job search. So, one of the things that we need to establish is whether a person is reasonable in terms of where they hope to go and how much we as an institution can help them along the way. Sometimes we can’t, and there are other schools that are a better fit. So, yes, if I have concerns about path, I’ll run it by our career services team. mbaMission: Are short-term goals scrutinized more closely in the weak economy, where certain sectors are maybe not hiring? RM: What careers exist as you come in the door and what exists as you go out are really uncertain. No one knows. Right now, sales and trading is probably a difficult career path, but by the time students graduate, that could be completely different. We do try to make sure that changes, especially for career changers, seem reasonable and achievable, and that they have transferable skills from their prior careers to accomplish their goals. Career changers do have a harder time in an economic environment like this. mbaMission: We have candidates who are calling us and expressing their anxieties about being laid off. The perfect job they might have had before literally no longer exists, and they’re concerned about eventually taking a job that may be a step down financially or just on the org chart. Can you speak to those concerns? RM: In the essays, it is important for people to help us understand the opportunities they have had before them. It’s the opportunity and how they leveraged it that matters. Bottom line: we all understand that people have lost jobs for no reason other than the economy. I think it is important to be clear and transparent about what your choices were and how you are making the best and the most out of the decisions you made. mbaMission: If someone was intending to go to business school this year, didn’t see a layoff coming, and is now looking for a job and is worried about the message that can sendâ€"“I’m only going to be at this job for one year”â€"do you see that as being problematic? RM: People just need to be honest. This is a very unusual time, and B-schools haven’t seen this type of situation across so many sectors, so we are learning, too. I think honesty and transparency is the best that we can hope for from one another. mbaMission: Can you reflect on the application volume in the past year? Are there any data you can share? RM: We typically don’t announce real numbers or percentages until a little bit later in the summer, but it has been a mixed bag this year. Applications domestically rose a good deal, while applications internationally fell, specifically in two countries, India and South Korea. Net, we’re down a little from last year, but we’d seen pretty substantial increases for the three years prior to that, so it was more of a slowdown. Chicago was probably impacted a little bit more than some of our peers with our international pool, because we were in the media last summer when we lost our international student loan program. We were able to find a new one in late August, but the timing of the message likely played a role in the decline. In addition, there are the limitations to H1B visas, and the TARP fund regulations, making it seem as if the United States is not very welcoming to international students anymore, which, of course, is not the case. I think interest internationally will rebound because we all have loan programs again. By the time students graduate, the TARP regulations will have ended, and hopefully, the economy will have been in the recovery mode for a while. mbaMission: Can you talk a little bit about what’s going on in terms of on the job front, for full time and for internships? RM: We don’t graduate until the middle of June, so we have a ways to go yet. Other schools are graduating this week. I would say that the downward spiral has slowed. Jobs are now coming back to the marketplace. What has really been impressive is Booth’s approach to providing students with lots of access points. Faculty, alumni and administrators have been scouring the world for opportunities for our students. We have doubled the number of entrepreneurship internship positions that students can enroll in this summer. We’ve offered a summer public interest fund for people who are doing internships in nonprofit or government. The school has really stepped up to provide meaningful opportunities and support for our students. We’re hopeful that by the time we get around to the first part of June, all our students who wish to have an internship actually have one. I think we are well on our way there. mbaMission: Do you have a prediction for where application volumes are going to go this year? RM: If the economy has a slow recovery in the fall, applications may increase. But, if it stays down and there’s not a lot of job growth in the United States and around the world, I imagine applications will fall. People are taking the GMAT test, but whether they apply or not is something yet to be determined. mbaMission: I personally think we are going to see a decrease in applications. RM: I’m with you. I tend to be on the more conservative side. There’s a lot of unrest out there, and if you remember after the 2001 dot-bomb, applications did fall for two years before they turned around again. There was just so much uncertainty around the quality of the investment. mbaMission: So, I would like to wrap up with a few questions on the application process. If you could just walk us through the application process at the school, I think people would be quite interested in hearing about the review process itself. RM: We want to give the control of the application process back to the applicant. We have designed an application that has a myriad of questions that we ask and want answered, along with free form space for a student to communicate what he or she thinks is most important. We will evaluate how well an applicant manages the different components of the application, from the data forms to their choice of recommenders to “What questions do they choose if we ask question A or B?” Then for us, most importantly, is how they navigate that free-form presentation piece. We look at it in a holistic way. We look for a profile that seems to be coherent and make sense. As for the evaluation process, we typically have two people read the application before inviting that [candidate] to interview. While the interview has been blind in the past, we may be making a few changes this next year. After that interview report comes back, it goes into the file, and it’s usually read one or two more times. The final evaluations focus on fit to the institution and ability to match each other’s needs in terms of opportunities, engagement and that chemistry that is so important for students to be able to thrive in our environment. mbaMission: How do you read an application? Do you pick up a PowerPoint presentation first or read a recommendation, perhaps? RM: Typically, I go through the data portions. Work experience, numbers, schools, major, a little bit of parental background, kind of getting the overall profile, getting a sense of the candidate. Often [I] go right into the recommendation letters for a bit, just to see how somebody else perceives the candidate. Then, I read the application essays, typically spending a fair amount of time on the PowerPoint. When an application gets to me, it has typically been read at least four times, so I’m getting the benefit of a lot of different voices on that file. Now that I have my MBA from Booth, I know types of candidates thrive here. I’ve been in this business ten years, and if I can’t see it now, I don’t know what I’ve been doing. mbaMission: I know you’re a big fan of the PowerPoint presentation, so it’s obviously back next year? RM: We’re going to keep it; however, we may tweak it a bit. We’ll definitely be doing our application review in the next couple weeks. mbaMission: When can we expect the application to be released? RM: Probably in mid-June. The Great Gatsby And The Destruction Of The American Dream The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is about the corruption of the American Dream, and the downfall of those who attempt to attain its illusionary goals. As the novel shows, the 20th century is a moral wasteland and a corruption of the original idealistic American Dream of the past. Fitzgerald's moral wasteland is shown physically in the valley of ashes scene of the novel. This 'dismal' and 'desolate' wasteland exists side-by-side with the white and unreal dream of Daisy and her world. Even the colors of this landscape have correlations to Daisy: the yellow of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg's spectacles and the brick of the houses on the street is a color of decay, but also of riches like sunlight and gold. Also, the ashes in the valley form figures (to Nick) which disintegrate at the slightest puff of wind. Gatsby is incapable of recognizing the ashes of what Daisy represents and takes her emptiness for substance. Although Nick sees the moral desolation of the Buchanans' world, Gatsby cannot and tries to find in this world a dream worth holding on to. As shown in Gatsby's parties, nothing is tethered to reality; there is laughter without amusement, 'enthusiasm' between strangers, friends without friendship, and life without meaning. Gatsby's dream is that through wealth and power, one can acquire happiness (Daisy). Throughout the novel we see that Gatsby cannot see that the past is over and done with and he therefor can have no chance with Daisy. He is sure that he can capture his dream with wealth and influence. Nick attempts to show Gatsby the folly of his dream and tell him that he cannot relive the past, but Gatsby confidently replies, Yes you can, old sport. There are many connections between Gatsby's dream with the American Dream. A big part of both is the pursuit of material things and both have a touch (or more than a touch) of unreality about them. The American dream used to be self-betterment, wealth, and success through hard work and perseverance or luck, pluck, and virtue, as Alger would put it. However, in the modern era, all that changed. The American Dream shrunk from self-betterment, wealth, and success through hard work and perseverance to 'success' through wealth by any means possible, just as Gatsby's dream, his Platonic conception of himself, shrunk into Daisy. The corruption of the American dream can be illustrated by how Gatsby came by his fortune. Through his dealings with organized crime, he didn't adhere to the original American Dream guidelines. His very dishonesty that allowed him to get the wealth and connections to be near Daisy is also the very thing that would make it impossible for him to live in Daisy's world or she in his. In effect, pursuing his dream without thought to honesty or morality, Gatsby guaranteed that his dream would not come true. This is true also of the American Dream. Those who try to attain the American Dream without thought to honesty or morality are doomed to have their dreams remain unattainable or, if they achieve wealth, to have the dream become meaningless due to their very immorality (like Jordan's cheating takes the meaning out of her 'wins'). Also, in the novel all the immoral and dishonest people (Tom, Daisy, Jordan) have all the money. This concept of the corruption and destruction of the American Dream is also physically illustrated by how the 'fresh, green promise' of the world was displaced by the 'gloomy', 'gray' Valley of Ashes. The Great Gatsby illustrates how the pursuit for happiness through materialism cannot be successful without accompanying morality. Cut off from their mid-West traditions and ethics, the characters in the novel live in a sort of sick parody of the American Dream. They cannot be truly happy because they lack the inner reserves for such an emotion. This parallels modern society's rootlessness and accompanying corruption of the American Dream. Goddard had a hard time getting funding to pursue the work, but he eventually persuaded the Smithsonian Institution to support his research. In 1919, he wrote his first major treatise (published by the Smithsonian) called A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes, outlining the challenges of lifting mass high to the atmosphere and exploring how rockets could solve the problems of high-altitude studies.   Dr. Robert H. Goddard and His Rockets. NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA-MSFC) Goddard experimented with a number of different rocket configurations and fuel loads, beginning with solid-rocket propellant fuel mixes in 1915. Eventually, he switched to liquid fuels, which required a redesign of the rockets he was using. He had to engineer fuel tanks, turbines, and combustion chambers that hadnt been fashioned for this kind of work. On March 16, 1926, Goddards first rocket soared up from a hill near Worcester, MA, on a 2.5-second flight that went up just over 12 meters.   That gasoline-powered rocket led to further developments in rocket flight. Goddard began working on newer and more powerful designs using bigger rockets. He had to solve problems controlling the angle and attitude of rocket flight, and also had to engineer rocket nozzles that would help to create greater thrust for the vehicle. Goddard also worked on a gyroscope system to control the stability of the rocket and devised a payload compartment to carry scientific instruments. Eventually, he created a parachute recovery system to return the rockets and payload safely to the ground. He also patented the multi-stage rocket in common use today. His 1919 paper, plus his other investigations into rocket design, are considered classics in the field. Dr. Goddard at his Launch Control Shack. NASA Headquarters - GReatest Images of NASA (NASA-HQ-GRIN) Goddard and the Press Although Goddards groundbreaking work garnered scientific interest, his early experiments were criticized by the press as being too fanciful. Notably, however, much of this press coverage contained scientific inaccuracies. The most famous example appeared on January 20, 1920, in The New York Times. The article mocked Goddards predictions that rockets might someday be able to circle the Moon and transport humans and instruments to other worlds. The Times retracted the article 49 years later. The retraction was published on July 16, 1969- the day after three astronauts landed on the Moon: Further investigation and experimentation have confirmed the findings of Isaac Newton in the 17th Century and it is now definitely established that a rocket can function in a vacuum as well as in an atmosphere. The Times regrets the error. Later Career Goddard continued his work on rockets throughout the 1920s and 30s, still fighting for recognition of the potential of his work by the U.S. government. Eventually, he moved his operations to Roswell, NM, and with financial backing from the Guggenheim family, he was able to carry out more rocket research. In 1942, Goddard and his team moved to Annapolis, Maryland, to work on jet-assisted take-off (JATO) technology.  He continually refined his designs throughout World War II, although not sharing his work with other scientists. Goddard preferred secrecy due to his concerns about patent infringement and intellectual property theft. (He repeatedly offered his services and technology, only to be rebuffed by the military and government.) Near the end of World War II and not long before his death, Goddard had a chance to see a captured German V-2 rocket and realized just how much the Germans had copied his work, despite the patents he had gained.   Death and Legacy Throughout his life, Robert H. Goddard remained on the research faculty at Clark University. After World War II, he  joined the American Rocket Society and its board of directors. However, his health was deteriorating, and he died on August 10, 1945. He was buried in Worcester, Massachusetts. Goddards wife, Esther Christine Kisk, gathered his papers after his death and worked on securing patents after Goddards death. Many of Goddards original papers containing his seminal work on rockets can be seen of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. Goddards influence and impact continues to be felt throughout our current space exploration efforts, plus those in the future. Honors Robert H. Goddard may not have been honored fully during his lifetime, but his legacy lives on in many places. NASAs Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is named after him, as are several schools across the U.S. He amassed 214 patents for his work during his lifetime, with 131 being awarded after he died. IPhone’s, Blackberries, and laptops are becoming an important part of our daily lives. We are all so dependent on these devices that sometimes we treat them as if it is part of our family. Technology has become a priority for many people, and it is likely that people with choose technology over many other things. Although technology has made life easier for us and more convenient, there are several ways in which it has damaged the quality of our life. First, technology has a negative impact on our social life; second, technology takes over our free time; and finally, technology has negatively changed the way we learn. In the twentieth century technology is definitely something that the world cant live without. We can never put an end to the development of technology, but people should consider the massive amount of damage this wonderful creation is putting upon us. People are starting to become dependent and emotionally attached to these technological devices. It is becoming very difficult for today’s generation to spend a few hours, or even minutes without the usage of technology. These sorts of desperations towards technology changed people’s social lives. Though they have created social networking websites such as â€Å"Facebook†, It is not an effective way to communicate with people, simply because conversations are very vague. Communication is talking to friends in person, not texting them, or talking to them online. The computer is like a wall between you and the real person that you just cannot get through when you are texting. People who tend to communicate with others on the computer and talk to their friends over instant messaging or texting surely do not know the meaning of socializing. Even though some may be very shy, the technology will give them even less confidence to go out and socialize with people with real people. Roy McGregor (2012) analyzes the negative impact of technology on our lives and he states â€Å"We are physically short of breath, emotionally short of tranquility, and relationally short of hours required to focus on the people most important to us† (p. 149). People tend to spend more time using technology rather than connecting with their families and friends. Starting a long detailed conversation with someone in person is almost impossible, simply because there is not enough to talk about, and people are adjusted to quick way of talking through text messaging. A couple of years ago families setting around the dining table and talking about their day was a normal routine, but that is no longer the case for most families, since there are portable devices that could be taken any where, even the dining table! Technology has departed families and friends, taking away the attention we deserve from people who are important to us. Furthermore, technology is taking over our free time. People are always busy using their â€Å"Time saving devices† (McGregor, 2012, p. 148) when it is actually destroying their time, even when they are free. Whether we are at school, work, or at home there is always something to do on the Internet, or on T. V. There are many activities that people could consider doing on their free time, for example out door activities, but people choose technology because it is becoming a number one source of amusement. In the â€Å"Embraced as a Time Saver, Technology Has seduced us into Giving up so Much† article, the author states the following: â€Å"What these devices have done, he argues it squeeze what used to be free time down to practically nothing† (McGregor, 2012, p. 149). According to McGregorwhat used to be considered as free time is now being taken over by technology. Today’s young generation is being affected the most by this era of technological devices. If the world of technology continues to be used in a non-effective way the future generations may suffer a lot from this in terms of this addiction towards technology. Decreasing the unnecessary usage of technology might actually improve the quality of an individual’s life, by allowing them to make time for more exciting activities, and creating a better life for them selves and the future generations. Technology has changed the way people gain knowledge. We don’t read books as much as before, because the information that is being provided on the web is only a click away. Our relationship with the Internet has impacted the way we read information that is being provided to us. Reading is becoming a difficult task for many people, because it is hard to stay focused and read a page, without the flashy colors of the computer screen. In the article â€Å" What the Internet is doing to our Brains† the author states, â€Å"Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, and begin looking for something else to do† (Carr, 2009, p. 87). In our generation we cannot get through a research assignment without the use of the Internet, because we just want quick notes, and easy access to information. The Internet also changes the way we think, because online articles are very basic and broad information that is being given to us, so we do not take the time to actually judge the information that is being provided. Everything on the Internet has already been summarized, therefore leaving no space for the brain to actually perceive and analyze knowledge that is being provided to it. Although the Internet has made our lives so much easier, by providing us immediate results, it has a negative long-term effect by decreasing our level of intelligence. In conclusion, although technology is a great accomplishment for the human race, it has not completely improved our quality of life. We are definitely fast paced and effective, but technology has gone to far and it has been negatively affecting some important aspects of our daily lives. Technology has affected our quality of life. It causes isolation from our social life, it takes away too much time, and finally it has negatively affected the way we absorb and gain knowledge.

Introduction One million dollar question, which project and human resource management have asked for several years while doing recruitment, is whether do recruit individual endowed with hard skills or soft skills. This leads to asking the quest that between the two is the most important for an organization. Hard skills can be defined as technical know how or specific abilities that relate to the core business that an organization does to networking, machine operations among others. Soft skills, on the other hand, are subjective and undefined (Peggy, 2007).   It mostly deals with issues like communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution among others. However, everybody agrees that both skills are necessary for the success of an organization, which between the two is most crucial? The crucial character of a manager is the ability to be flexible, a manager who can understand organization process, tools and techniques being utilized within the organization. Managers should be able to adapt to all types of organization and project process and have technical know-how on running team operation. This characteristic emphasizes on the soft skills and portrays technical skills as added advantage (Peggy, 2007) Managers spent most of their time almost 90% communicating, solving problems, negotiating planning among others. These are mostly soft skills that are being put to use. One can, therefore, argue that although both skills are essential, soft skills are being required in a higher percentage to help in coordinating hard skills for an organization success. Peggy (2007) states that whenever one wants to stay competitive and ahead of the game, one need to keep his or her hard skills sharp. However, for one to succeed faster, he needs to keep his soft skills updated. Therefore, in conclusion, soft skills always precede hard skills for an average person and training institution should ensure more soft skills in their employees. Motivation is one of the key elements for the performance of organization employees, as individuals who are highly motivated performs more than individuals who are not highly motivated. The motivation factors come from soft skills which when combined with hard skills then individuals can be in a position to achieve or reach self actualization. All employers needs employees who could deliver assignments in time and factor of time management plays very important aspect of project success. It also brings the idea of planning within organization which is an aspect of soft skills. Therefore we can conclude that even if one possess greater aspect of hard skills, without elements of soft skills the project can not be successful and always hard skills plays second place to soft skills. Good leadership calls for effective communication and without effective communication, project cannot pick off and starts operating smoothly, most researchers have argued that one with soft skills can assembly individuals with technical know-how and operates organization smoothly while individuals with only technical know-how could not manage an organization.
